Knowing when it’s time to clear can be tricky – especially if you’re a new forest owner. But there are clear signs to look out for. Clearing should be done when the seedling or young forest starts to become so dense that the crowns of the trees no longer get enough light. This is when the battle for space, water and nutrients intensifies.
For spruce, the first clearing is often done at 1.5-2 meters height, while pine should be cleared when they reach about 2-3 meters. Deciduous forests sometimes require an earlier intervention.
Signs that it is time to clean up:
- Trees grow densely and compete for light
- Lots of brush, shrubs and undergrowth
- Low or uneven growth
- Difficult to navigate the stock
