When is it best to plant forests? Tips for the right timing and preparation

Skogsplantering

Timing is crucial for successful afforestation. In Sweden, planting is usually done in spring or early summer, but fall planting can also work – depending on weather conditions and soil preparation.

Before planting, the soil should be prepared with e.g. spot soil preparation to create good planting points. This improves oxygen availability, reduces competition from vegetation and protects the plants from frost and pests.

The best window in the plantation:

  • Spring planting: April-June. Stable weather and moist soil provide good establishment.
  • Autumn planting: August-October. Provided that the plants are properly hardened.
  • Soil preparation: Should be done the year before planting or the same spring depending on the method.
