What is ash spreading – and why is it important for your forest?

Ash spreading is a forest management measure that is often overlooked, but plays a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility and long-term forest health. Cutting down forests also removes important nutrients from the ecosystem. By spreading biofuel ash back onto the clearings, a large proportion of these substances – especially potassium, calcium and magnesium – can be returned to the soil.

Ash spreading is particularly suitable after coppicing (branches and tops), as this type of harvesting removes much more nutrients than traditional timber harvesting. Compensating for this protects the future productive capacity of the land.

At Grimslövs Skogstjänst, we have extensive experience of spreading ash in Kronoberg County and know how to plan and carry out the operation in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way.

Benefits of ash spreading:

  • Returning essential nutrients to the forest soil
  • Favors the long-term productive capacity of the soil
  • Balancing pH in acidified soils
  • An approved and encouraged measure under FSC and PEFC
